Duo fails to hit the heights
Digital synth-pop duo the Pet Shop Boys try to electrify the pop world again with their latest studio album Yes. This is their 10th studio album - their last was Fundamental in 2006.
Unfortunately, the mellow and laid-back mood of the music doesn't inspire a response of 'yes' but more of an 'okay' or a 'maybe'. The album as a whole lacks energy. There are a few danceable tracks, but even those won't have you breaking a sweat.
This album has a somewhat anti-climactic feel, especially as the Pet Shop Boys were recently awarded a 2009 Brit Award for their outstanding contribution to music.
Stand-out tracks include Vulnerable with its infectious digital bass beat and the dance number Did You See Me Coming, that will have fans swinging their hips to the upbeat tempo.
The Way It Used To Be is probably the best track on the album, with its classic Pet Shop Boys style and sound. There is also a limited-edition release called Yes, etc that includes a second bonus CD with seven of the songs remixed.
Although fans will definitely enjoy this album, there are no super gems in Yes that match or come close to the duo's mega-hits such as It's a Sin or What Have I Done To Deserve This.
