As a small-scale stimulus package for Easter shopping, the Langham Place mall handed out cash vouchers to pedestrians in Mong Kok on Wednesday. Five hundred vouchers each worth HK$100 were given away, good for use exclusively in the 200 shops in the mall as part of its Happy Sale, from today until Monday. Governments from Taiwan to Thailand have tried doling out cash to citizens to get their economies moving. Obviously, the retail centre felt it too could cheer up consumer sentiment. By the 1.30pm start time, more than 200 people were in a queue for the coupons, which are as good as cash inside Langham Place because they have no conditions. To add an Easter touch, the two girls giving them out were wearing bunny ears. For extra cheer, there will also be cheerleaders at the mall this afternoon, waving pom-poms and encouraging people to give an S-H-O-P. If you join them in a choreographed rally cry, you might get a gift pack - if you don't mind losing your dignity.
