Spotlight on models that suit environment

Peter Hill

The lighting industry is shining brightly in the push to produce environmentally friendly products.

Many countries are urging the wide use of energy efficient lighting and encouraging manufacturers to produce more low-energy and eco-friendly products.

'The lighting fair's exhibits will cater for this trend, with the focus on environmental protection, greater energy efficiency and a longer lifetime of products such as solar lights and LED [light-emitting diode] lamps with low power consumption,' said Raymond Yip, Hong Kong Trade Development Council's assistant executive director.

Some lighting products provide the choice of krypton, halogen or fluorescent bulbs, which are more energy efficient than traditional bulbs.

Some lamps are being developed by replacing electrodes and filaments with fluorescent powders. Integrated electronic compact fluorescent lamps can reduce power consumption while lasting longer than traditional lamps.

LED lights are becoming increasingly popular for indoor lighting and hand-held products because of their low power consumption.

Hong Kong company Pumy Industrial, which employs more than 1,000 at its head office in Tai Kok Tsui and its mainland factory in Guangzhou, will exhibit energy efficient, low-voltage lights and solar lights at the fair.

Dora Chan, the firm's marketing assistant, said: 'Energy saving lighting has been the trend in the industry for the past few years. Most of our products are now solar powered. During production we use environmentally friendly products whenever possible. At the fair we hope to promote the importance of the green movement by inspiring buyers about the future of solar lights and other energy saving products.' Established in 1992, Pumy Industrial's main products are garden lights and string lights.

The company customises quality control and question-and-answer systems for each client to make sure that products comply with customers' standards and country standards.
