Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition), International ICT Expo and Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition)
It's green for go as the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) gets under way today  with one eye on the planet's carbon footprint.
As consumers become more concerned about the environment, manufacturers are reflecting that trend by producing more eco-friendly products, many of which will be on display at the largest fair of its kind in Asia and the second largest in the world.
Organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the electronics fair runs until Thursday  in conjunction with the International ICT Expo and Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition).
The fairs are being held at the expanded Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where exhibitors and buyers will be among the first to experience the state-of-the-art facilities, with more space and upgraded services and amenities at the Wan Chai site.
Raymond Yip,  HKTDC assistant executive director,  said the three world-class fairs would help companies to overcome the effects of the worldwide recession.
'World markets are experiencing the impact of the global economic crisis and companies need to make greater promotional efforts to remain competitive in these challenging times,' he said.
'They may exhibit at a number of fairs in times of prosperity, but in tough times they may choose to attend high-quality international exhibitions. These three fairs are important fairs in the electronics, ICT [information and communication technology] and lighting industries without doubt.
'Hong Kong is not immune to the financial tsunami. Yet its economy, with strong fundamentals and the sustainable domestic demand of the mainland, will likely fare better.'
Last year, the three fairs attracted 3,286 exhibitors and more than 79,000 buyers from around the world. The electronics fair, with 2,469 exhibitors and 51,851 buyers, was by far the biggest event, reflecting the position of electronic products as Hong Kong's biggest export earner. 
Categories in the electronics fair include audio-visual, digital imaging, accessories, home appliances, gaming, electronic manufacturing services, health care electronics, personal electronics, in-vehicle electronics and global positioning systems, office equipment, security products and telecommunications.
 The ICT fair will showcase products in computers and peripherals, digitainment and multimedia, storage technology, enterprise solutions, network and mobility, e-logistics and retail technologies, homegrown innovations, information technology (IT) outsourcing, IT security and trade-related services.
The lighting fair will feature green lighting, outdoor lighting, crystal lighting, table lamps and accessories, and components. Mr Yip said consumers were inceasingly buying products with green attributes amid concerns about the environment.
'This is due partly to the rise of green consumerism and market and government initiatives to safeguard the environment. The potential and demand for renewable energy, such as solar energy, is very high. The electronics fair caters to this trend.'
The electronics fair features a Solar Photovoltaic Energy Pavilion to showcase the latest technology. A conference on solar energy will be held tomorrow  for industry players to exchange information and discuss business opportunities. It will take place in Theatre 2 from 2.15pm to 5.15pm. On Wednesday, a conference on far infrared ray technology will be held in Rooms 404-405 from 10am to 5.15pm. A similar conference will be held at the same venue on Thursday from 10am to 4.45pm.
A seminar on low-carbon manufacturing will be addressed by Karen Ho  of the WWF in Hall 2 of the Oasis Area on Wednesday from 2-3pm.
The ICT expo also features a number of conferences and seminars. Six speakers will address the Mobile Vision 2009 conference tomorrow  in Rooms 406-407 from 10am to 4.30pm.  Also tomorrow, there will be a forum on Canadian innovation and technology partnering (Room 604, 2.30pm-5.30pm), a seminar on how technology can help retailers survive the economic downturn (Rooms 402-403, 2.30pm-5pm) and a seminar on money-saving tools for SMEs (Room 408, 3pm-5.30pm).
On Wednesday, the Mobile Security conference 2009 will be held in Room 401 from 10am to 4.30pm. A forum on software enterprises tackling the financial crisis (Rooms 406-407, 11am-12.30pm) and a seminar on 'cloud computing' (Rooms 406-407, 2pm-5.30pm) will be held the same day. On Thursday, a seminar on future trends in IT security (Rooms 406-407, 10.30am-12.30pm) will be addressed by five security experts.
The green theme will be very much in evidence at the lighting fair on Wednesday at a symposium on sustainable lighting technologies (Room 606-607, 3pm-5pm).
Exhibitors and buyers remain convinced that the three fairs provide excellent opportunities.
'We exhibit at the electronics fair because HKTDC is a globally known fair organiser and this location is convenient for meeting high-quality overseas customers,' said Charlie Yip,  managing director of OTO Bodycare (HK).  
Raju Narayanan,  sales manager of Gulf Wireless and Television,  said: 'As one of the major sourcing shows we participate in every year, the electronics fair enables us to keep abreast of the latest technology and trends and to expand our business development.'
All three fairs are open today,  tomorrow and Wednesday from 9.30am to 6.30pm and on Thursday from 9.30am to 5pm. Admission only to trade visitors who are 18 or above.
