Ever wonder why young people in Hong Kong are so appallingly ignorant about the birds and the bees? What Ng Man-lun of the Hong Kong Sex Education Association said about the group's difficulty in finding a venue to open this year's sex education festival might explain why. Some landlords simply refused to lease out their property; another would only do so if the festival changed its name to 'Adult health products festival'. It also insisted on banning any display of sex toys and enhancement devices. All these conditions kind of defeat the festival's purpose, so Dr Ng, a University of Hong Kong psychiatrist and sexologist, warned that the festival might have to relocate to Macau. The festival at least is helping to promote a fascinating new book published by sex workers support group Zi Teng. Its Chinese title means 'the way of a good client', and the book is a collection of intimate confessions by 11 sex customers, aged 26 to 64. They come from different social and economic backgrounds. One is a 50-year-old civil servant, who became handicapped in one leg and had trouble having sex with his wife. A hooker took pity on him and they became life-long friends. A self-styled elderly playboy claims to have had three wives and more than 20 girlfriends and still regularly visits prostitutes. A 54-year-old man said he and his wife were still deeply in love, so much so that she once gave him HK$500 to have sex with a hooker for 'relief'. The book raises questions and issues about the thinking and behaviour of each client. The book's editors could not approach the men's wives or girlfriends to get their points of view, for obvious reasons. But they said they consulted women's and family planning groups.
