Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery founder Catherine Kwai Yuk-nin talks of her love of Sichuan, from its food to its people and art. 'Sichuan is such a wonderful place,' she said. 'The food is spicy yet delicious; the scenery is beautiful and natural; the people are laid back and unsophisticated; and the air in Sichuan is just free.' Ms Kwai, who often travels to the western province for business and to meet friends, readily agreed when the chief executive of Sotheby's Asia, Kevin Ching Sau-hong, phoned to ask if she was interested in taking part in the South China Morning Post's Homes for Hope project for quake victims. 'It's all for a good cause,' she said. 'I'd love to do my share.' Ms Kwai has donated a print by contemporary Chinese symbolist painter Zhang Xiaogang from her personal collection for the charity auction at the earthquake anniversary memorial charity dinner to be held by the Post on May 12. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Homes for Hope project to help two quake-hit Sichuan villages - Qingquan in Mianzhu and Shengnan in Jiuzhaigou - rebuild houses and infrastructure. The limited-edition lithograph, My Memory No1, is part of Zhang's 'Big Family' series, which reaches back to the birth of the Chinese nation. The figures in the portraits often share the same gaze and expression, seemingly still and frozen. They are connected through a red line, symbolising the bloodline that links the family together. Last year, Zhang's Big Family No3 was auctioned at Sotheby's spring sale for more than HK$47.3 million, one of the highest prices for a contemporary Chinese work. 'A reason for me to choose this piece to support Sichuan victims is because Zhang graduated from Sichuan Fine Art Academy and he is identified as a leading member of the Southwestern China Art Group,' Ms Kwai said. She said she had been deeply impressed by the vitality, unity and spirit of mutual assistance among Sichuan artists. 'Every time I go to Sichuan, the painters I meet will introduce me to other young, relatively unknown, painters,' she said. 'They have a tradition in helping each other, which is rare in other places.' SCMP Homes for Hope: how you can give Donate online by credit card at http://homesfor hope.scmp.com.
