Besides his claim to fame as the son of one of the world's wealthiest tycoons, Li Ka-Shing, Richard Li Tsar-kai is a savvy businessman in his own right. Not shy to take risks, rather than enter his father's business, he took his own route. These are just a few highlights in his roller-coaster career.
Star TV
In 1990, Mr Li used a loan from his father to launch an Asian satellite television network called Star TV. In 1995, he sold it to media mogul Rupert Murdoch for a whopping US$950 million.
PCCW
When Mr Li acquired Tricom Holdings, a telecom equipment distributor in 1999, he announced plans to turn it into Asia's leading internet technology business under the name Pacific Century Cyber Works (PCCW). The result was a stock market frenzy, with the public rallying behind him, leading the company's stock to soar an incredible 1,246 per cent in a single day.
