Good To Go ready to turn the tables on Sun Trooper
The David Ferraris-trained Good To Go could hardly be said to have lived up to expectations, but the six-year-old gets it all laid out to improve his bottom line in tonight's Happy Valley feature - the St George's Challenge Cup (1,000m).
Ferraris had a good opinion of Good To Go (Douglas Whyte) in his early days that he held off gelding the good-looking son of Group One-winning mare Lady Jakeo, in the hope he might find a niche somewhere as a stallion.
But that was always going to hinge on racecourse performances and the South African trainer bit the bullet last year after Good To Go was just not doing enough to continue putting the operation off and an apparently wilful nature looked to be part of the reason.
While he did find some form at the final meeting last season with a fast-finishing third over this course and distance, any real assessment of whether the operation worked the trick was hampered early this term when Good To Go suffered a suspensory ligament injury.
That kept him off the scene for several months, but his second run back from the break last start served notice he is ready to at least put himself back into the winner's stall.
Opposed to tonight's likely warm favourite, Sun Trooper (Zac Purton), Good To Go finished eighth over the Valley 1,000m - but that hardly tells the real story.
