Renowned sinologist recognised for lifetime of scholarly effort

Thunderous applause filled City Hall's concert hall as the sinologist Jao Tsung-i collected the top award at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards ceremony yesterday.

Professor Jao, 93, a scholar and distinguished painter and calligrapher, was given the Honorary Award in recognition of a lifetime of academic and artistic achievement.

Speaking on behalf of Professor Jao, Lee Chack-fan, director of the Jao Tsung-i Petite Ecole, said the professor was grateful for the award, which came in recognition of his hard work.

Professor Jao also congratulated the other award-winners and urged them to 'continue their artistic creations on this land of freedom', Professor Lee said.

Over the past 70 years, Professor Jao's scholarly efforts have covered 13 areas of sinology, including ancient musicology, classical literature and a history of fine arts. He has written more than 60 books and over 400 academic articles.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, who presented the Honorary Award, praised Professor Jao's achievements and said his hard-working attitude served as a role model for young people.
