Not all DJs are dinosaurs. British vinyl spinner Aydin Hasirci may be called a veteran because he has spent half his life at the vibrant edge of the house music scene but he's still only 28.
Hasirci (above), better known as ATFC - or Aydin the Funki Chile (sic) - makes his Hong Kong debut tonight, an overdue visit from the wunderkind who kept house music alive when radio switched back to rock.
He was just 18 when his 1999 single In and Out of My Life, which sampled Fatboy Slim's Right Here Right Now, gave him a breakout British chart hit and led to an appearance on Top of the Pops, the nation's top music show. The producer, who has since founded his own house label, Onephatdeeva Productions, soon had dancefloors around the country jumping with follow-up mainstream top 40 hits such as Bad Habit and Sleep Talk, featuring Lisa Millett.
Hasirci, a regular at Gatecrasher and Ministry of Sound, as well as Ibiza's Defected nights at the legendary Pacha, has remixed everyone from Moby to Missy Elliott and even Diddy, prompting DJ Magazine to call him 'one of the top producers in the world of straight down the line, main-room house music'. Now his tunes are being remixed by others including Marc Evans, Funkerman and Ame Rej.
Recently Hasirci has been known for his work with Japanese producer Towa Tei, remixing Sometime Samurai. He has also teamed up with New York vocalist Yasmeen Sulieman for Tell U Y, a cheeky riposte to Paul Van Dyk's 90s hit Tell Me Why, and done remix work for All Saints, Samantha Mumba and the Lightning Seeds.
