The father and manager of Canto-pop singer Jill Vidal,  who will  face drug charges at Tokyo District Court tomorrow, arrived in the Japanese capital early yesterday  to visit her and prepare for the trial.
Vidal's father, Joey Vidal,  met his daughter for the time since February 24, when she and fellow singer Kelvin Kwan Chor-yiu  were arrested for suspected shoplifting and police found a cannabis cigarette on them.
But only Vidal - better known in Hong Kong by her stage name, Wei Si  - was charged after suspected heroin was found in her hotel room. 
Kwan returned to Hong Kong on March 28.
Vidal's father declined to comment on  her drug case.
 However, Joe Chan,  her manager at Amusic, said she was in good shape but worried that she might not be able to return home.
'She was better than expected,' Mr Chan said. 'People [in the detention centre] treated her nicely. This is a good time for her to think things over. She was unhappy before. 
'Of course, she was also afraid of not being able to go home.'
He said Vidal and her father had a tearful conversation in English during their meeting. 
Vidal had been practising Japanese and yoga while in detention, Mr Chan said, adding that she seemed to have put on weight. 
Shahmim Khattak,  a Hong Kong barrister familiar with Japanese law, quoted Japanese officials as saying that the trial had been moved from a courtroom with a capacity of 20 to a bigger room with 38 seats because of its high profile. 
Vidal's twin sister, fellow singer Janice Vidal,  confirmed on Tuesday that she would not  attend the trial in Tokyo.
'Actually my company gave me the decision to go or not but I wanted to stay, for a lot of reasons,' she said after attending  an RTHK function. 'I know if I see my sister - I know her so well - her reaction will be quite extreme. I don't want to do anything to disturb or affect her performance in the court.
'Right now, what I have to do is my work. I am sure my sister will understand that.'
She said she was 'a bit nervous' about her sister's trial, but trusted the Japanese lawyer taking care of her case 'very, very much'.
'I hope that everything will turn out fine,' she said.
