Mido Cafe

Fare Hong Kong (western and Chinese) classics. Same menu all day (9am to after 9pm) so breakfast options range from ham and eggs, omelettes and sandwiches to soup noodles and the signature baked pork ribs with rice.

Ambience This light-filled cha chaan teng, one of Hong Kong's oldest, opening in 1950, has a nostalgic charm with colourful tiling on walls and floors. It is an ideal place to start a Sunday, with a simple breakfast and sweet milk tea at one of the booths upstairs next to the green-shuttered windows, watching elderly locals chat in the park in front of the temple across the street.

Cost From HK$20 for breakfast item and hot drink.

Who to bring Fans of retro, and down-to-earth friends and family who will enjoy the atmosphere.

Turn-ons Don't expect anything but basic food here, but the combination of the nostalgic atmosphere and the simplicity of the food conjures up bitter-sweet feelings of childhood. Toasted sandwiches are neatly trimmed of their crusts and lightly toasted to a golden brown, but be prepared for processed cheese and ham. The omelettes make a filling start to the day.

Turn-offs We could feel our arteries clogging with every bite of the French toast - deep-fried and smothered in syrup. Delicious but lethal.

Drinks Hong Kong-style milk tea, coffee and the bohemian drink of yesteryear: yin yeung (coffee and tea mixed). Also iced coffee and tea, soft drinks and, perhaps later in the day, beer.
