Rosaryhill offers action for athletes

Inter-school sports tournaments may be over for the 2008/09 academic year. But for student athletes who were looking to improve their game, participating in the Rosaryhill Sports Tournament hosted by the Rosaryhill School's sports association was a great experience.

Now in its eighth year, the competition was held from April 14 to 16 at the Western Park Sports Centre. It attracted students from 22 schools around the territory. They competed in basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis.

Sports association chairman James Liu Chih-kit, 17, said the main aim of the event was to increase interest in sports and provide a channel to interact with other schools. This year's event was a huge success, with a record number of schools participating, Chih-kit said.

'It has become a school tradition and it is something that teachers and students want to keep on doing,' he said. 'Last year, we planned to hold it during the Easter holidays but, due to problems with venue availability, it was postponed to the summer holidays. This year we were lucky to have it during the Easter holidays.'

For secondary school students to manage such a big event was not easy, said Chih-kit.

'I've learned to manage manpower efficiently and to work in a team. We had some difficulties contacting schools and booking venues, but in the end the event ran smoothly.'
