CUHK nutritionist puts retirement on hold to take up new challenge
Georgia Guldan is turning 60 but she is giving up her comfortable lifestyle and academic career in Hong Kong to join the Asian University of Women in Bangladesh this summer.
Speaking to Education Post Dr Guldan, associate professor of biochemistry with Chinese University, said she had spent most of her adult life in teaching and research in Asia.
'That will be an adjustment. I've gotten used to the convenient transport, international cultural environment, great university library and rapid communications, and lots more in Hong Kong,' Dr Guldan, who comes from Wisconsin in the US, said.
'But I've worked for over 30 years in South and Southeast Asia, some of it when the countries were much less developed than they are today.'
Dr Guldan said she was confident she would be able adjust again.
'I've never had a problem before, living without electricity and having a monotonous diet, etc, as is needed, as long as I feel safe, have supportive colleagues and an adequately hygienic environment,' she said.
Another reason she was driven to take up the seemingly challenging post at the Bangladesh-based university was that it was the country in which she did her PhD research.
