Pui Pui the Yuen Long crocodile helped liven up the city at the height of Sars in 2003. Who knows what magic the appearance of a mysterious creature off Lamma Island could do to revive recession-hit Hong Kong?

A reader and Lamma resident spotted what looked like a relative of the Loch Ness monster submerging off the island and sent several exclusive pictures of the incident to our newsroom. We were all fired up - stop the presses!

'While walking along the coastline of Lamma Island near Sok Kwu Wan with my wife on Friday the 17th of April, I noticed this strange thing in the water,' he wrote. 'I took two photos of it before it floated away out of sight. I have kept it stored on my camera. It kept bobbing in and out of the water, and made me think of the Loch Ness Monster, seen in Scotland! I think ... it's quite peculiar and interesting when you look closely.'

The silhouette certainly indicated the head and neck of a monster of some sort. But on closer inspection, it looks more like a floating litter bag.
