Image is everything in the high-powered business world. But, for those who can afford a selection of luxury clothing and accessories, the items don't come with a manual on the art of power dressing.
Those looking to dress to impress must find the right look and cut, and Helena Boxer, director of Quintessentially Bespoke, the luxury fashion line of the concierge service, says that men should look for ready-to-wear and custom-made suits from Prada and Richard James. Lanvin and Burberry offer 'amazing' evening suits while Ermenegildo Zegna and Hugo Boss serve as conservative alternatives.
'Women rarely wear full suits these days and a skirt suit is dated,' Ms Boxer says, explaining that unless it is a requirement, they can instead opt for dresses by Roland Mouret and Todd Lynn for a stylish feminine look that is still professional.
She says Christian Louboutin, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga are usually the market leaders for shoe and handbag trends and styles. But in this economic climate, it is no longer vogue to flash a designer logo.
The face is usually the first point of visual contact so makeup can make or break a look. British makeup artist and Quintessentially consultant Georgiana Stokes says that the golden rule for applying makeup is to keep it simple. Focus on one trend or one look at a time so as not to overload the face. 'The key to keeping your look trendy without becoming a fashion victim is to identify the key component of the season,' she says. 'Whether this is a strong lip colour, a heavy brow, doll-like cheeks or a fierce 50s eyeline, a quick glance through the latest fashion magazines will give you an instant idea of the trend.'
The most important thing to do is to personalise the look and make it your own rather than copy the trend completely. Many seasonal looks, such as intense red lips or thick black eyeliner, can overwhelm delicate features. Ms Stokes suggests lighter and more office-friendly alternatives such as a red gloss or a thinner eyeline.
Many business executives agonise over the correct watch to wear when meeting clients, struggling to find the right brand between too plain and too flashy.
