In the hive

Honey bees put all their honey in hives. They make them out of beeswax. Think of a hive as a big building full of tiny rooms. The rooms are called honeycomb cells.

Three kinds of bees live in the hive. One is the queen. She is the most important bee in the nest. Drones are male bees who look after the queen. The rest of the bees are female worker bees. They fly around looking for nectar to make honey with.

Nectar of flowers

Honey is a sweet yellow liquid. Honey-bees make it. They make it from the nectar of flowers. Nectar is a sweet liquid that flowers make. It attracts insects like honey bees, who help flowers 'mate' or pollinate. Nectar is Latin - it means 'drink of the gods'.

Humans have eaten honey since the beginning of time. But honey bees collect it for themselves. It is their food. They collect it in the spring and summer. When it's cold and there are no flowers, they have something to eat.
