If you liked Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline will fascinate and delight you. It's an interesting film, but if you're not used to offbeat films like Nightmare, you may find it a little strange.

Coraline - not Caroline, as both viewers and characters frequently and mistakenly think - is an adventurous little girl who has just moved into a new house with her busy, work-obsessed parents. Coraline decides to explore the 150-year-old house on her own, and soon stumbles across a little door in the family room.

The door opens - with a key that looks like a button - onto a secret pathway that leads her to another world that looks almost identical to the one in which she lives. The only difference is that her parents have time to spend with her, and their eyes have been replaced with buttons.

Coraline decides life beyond the door is much more enjoyable that life in the real world. But then she starts to uncover a terrifying secret about the alternative existence.

The storyline is simple and the moral is to be thankful for what we have, and not complain.

The 3D work is incredibly impressive - the food in particular looks real. But this realism may be frightening for younger viewers.
