The creator of Hong Kong's most popular cartoon piglets is speaking out in defence of what she says are the unfairly maligned animals.

And Alice Mak Ka-bik says she may mobilise the cartoon pair, McDull and McMug, to ease people's fears and encourage medical workers. 'We have the experience of Sars, and so it should be fine,' she said.

During the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2003, Mak drew comic strips to promote public hygiene. 'The message I would like to send this time is that people should not be too worried,' Mak said. 'Sometimes people become ill because they are so worried.'

But what she would really like to see is another name for swine flu, which is giving pigs a bad name in the community (the World Health Organisation now calls it H1N1).
