If you've missed the old Jim Carrey, Yes Man could be the film to signal his return. The plot is simple. Carl Allen (Carrey) has become a 'no man' since his marriage broke down, shutting himself away from the world.
One day, an old buddy drags him to an inspirational talk with a 'life guru'. Inspired, Carl decides to open himself to opportunities and say 'yes' to everything. The result is that his life makes a 180-degree turn and soon he has found himself a new girlfriend, Allison (Zooey Deschanel).
But he also discovers that 'yes' can spell trouble, if it is an automatic reaction rather than a careful decision. The movie's message - that you should think before you blindly agree to do something - is obvious. But the movie is not exactly a guide to when to 'yes' and when to say 'no', so don't watch it looking for answers.
Yes Man is less fresh and inspirational than Liar Liar or Bruce Almighty. But it's still good to see Carrey back in a comic role after his foray into 'serious' films, such as The Number 23 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Take a key from the movie and say 'yes' to an evening of entertainment. The old-school Carrey antics and the belly laughs they give rise to will do you good.
