Electric car batteries raise more problems than they solve

I would like to issue a word of caution on electric vehicles.

It seems that everyone is very excited about the use of them on Hong Kong's roads.

However, I think we have to ask if using electric vehicles would really bring us any benefits.

In fact the savings from this technology may not be as great as thought, if the total lifetime level of pollution is taken into account.

Pure electric vehicles may not operate successfully in Hong Kong due to the steep inclines which will limit their range.

Hybrid versions may be more successful but these still produce pollution from their engines.

In addition, the power stations that supply power for recharging are themselves causing pollution.
