There's an ancient French proverb that states simply: 'It is impossible to overdo luxury,' which could appropriately be applied to an extravagant event with a Gallic theme taking place this month. Boutique Boulevard: So Chic, So Central, has been created by Hongkong Land in collaboration with the French Chamber of Commerce and will run for two weeks, from Friday to May 30. Free to all, the multivenue event will feature a number of activities, exhibitions and shows never before seen in Hong Kong, including sophisticated lifestyle workshops, eye-catching art installations, displays of classic haute couture and visiting artisans sharing their expertise. David Martin, head of retail for Hongkong Land, explains that Boutique Boulevard is designed to showcase the behind-the-scenes secrets of the luxury-goods industry. '[We] hope to share with the Hong Kong public the meaning and celebration of the art de vivre ... in a way that honours the finest things in life,' he says. More than 40 luxury brands will participate in the event, including Hermes, which will be bringing one of the makers of its iconic Kelly bag to demonstrate his craft; the house of Chanel will be flying in haute couture items from its archives in Paris; an engraver from YSL's atelier in Paris will personalise accessories; while Chaumet will display elegant pieces in the museum part of the boutique. There will also be a photographic exhibition from Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana featuring the AC Milan football team and the Italian rugby team. The art installations have been designed by top fashion stylist Holly Suan Gray and take the form of life-sized room sets, one of which will be suspended from the ceiling of Prince's Building while another will feature dancers performing the tango in a birdcage. Workshops will include the Quintessential Tea Experience: High Tea & Poetry, given by Wendy Siu, who has been honoured by the French government with a medal for her know-how in promoting the French art of living. Boutique Boulevard: So Chic, So Central will be held in Alexandra House, Chater House, Prince's Building, The Landmark and The Landmark Mandarin Oriental.
