K-On (Anime)
It's time to pump up the volume and rock to the tunes of K-On!, a high school comedy anime.
The show is based on the manga created by Kakifly, which has run in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara magazine since 2007. So far only the first volume has been published as graphic novel.
Handling animation production is Kyoto Animation which has worked on Inuyasha, Kiki's Delivery Service and Kiddy Grade.
The show is about four high school girls' attempt to keep the school's Light Music Club going. Due to the laidback nature of club president Ritsu Tainaka and lead guitarist Yui Hirasawa, things are at something of a standstill. Apart from Yui, the band members are Mio Akiyama on bass guitar, Ritsu on drums and Tsumugi on keyboards.
The opening theme song Cagayake! Girls is performed by Aki Toyosaki with Yoko Hikasa, Satomi Sato and Minako Kotobuki. During its debut week on the Oricon weekly singles chart, the single shot to No. 4. The ending theme, Don't Say 'Lazy', performed by the same quartet, reached No. 2.
The show seems to mirror real life high school girl band Scandal who performed in Hong Kong last year at the Animation, Comics and Games convention, although there is no official connection.
