The Wenzhou Chamber of Commerce in Dongguan has been classified an illegal organisation and banned. The chamber was never registered and had organised events without approval, the Guangzhou Daily reported, citing sources within the Dongguan government. The authorities ordered the chamber to stop all forms of activity on April 30. The chamber had been planning to hold an inauguration celebration at the Dongguan Exhibition International Hotel on Saturday, but the event has now been cancelled. According to its website, the chamber of commerce was founded in 1901 and is an NGO with branches across the mainland and overseas in three countries. There are six chambers in Guangdong, excluding Dongguan. According to the chamber's website, it promotes goods produced by Zhejiang city and explores new markets through 'overseas study trips'.
