THE co-accused of murdered triad boss Andely Chan Yiu-hing went on trial in the District Court yesterday accused of attacking film producer Wong Long-wai.

  Mechanic Wong Sik-ming, 26, allegedly wounded Wong on May 5, 1992 - a day after pop star Anita Mui Yim-fong was said to have been slapped in the face by Wong Long-wai at the Take One karaoke bar in Kowloon Tong.

  Film producer Wong Pak-nin, younger brother of actor Wong Pak-ming, testified that in May 1992 he worked for Wong's Film Production Company, run by Wong Long-wai.

   He said he understood Wong Long-wai was upset because Ms Mui had treated him rudely in the karaoke lounge on May 4, 1992, by turning her back on him.

   Wong Sik-ming pleaded not guilty to two counts of wounding with intent and a count of claiming to be a member of the Sun Yee On triad society.

  The charges which Wong Sik-ming faces were yesterday amended in view of Chan's death last year.

  The defendant was originally scheduled to be tried together with Chan who faced the same charges.

   Wong Sik-ming is accused of wounding Wong Long-wai and Wong Kam-chung outside 256-279 Jaffe Road in Wan Chai, with intent to cause them grievous bodily harm.

   They were director and actor consultant of Wong's Film Production Company respectively.

   Prosecutor Paul Leung said the offences occurred at about 10.40 pm on May 5, 1992 outside the Bamboo Village Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant.

  Earlier, witness Wong Pak-nin said he left for Canada after the incident for six months.

  He admitted one subject which he discussed with friends and family was the cause of the incident, but he denied having guessed that Chan was responsible for wounding Wong Long-wai.

 The witness said that on May 5, 1992, his friend, cameraman Yuen Wai-kwok, told him Wong Long-wai would like to invite him for dinner with friends from the film industry.

 He said the alleged attack happened after he had dinner with Wong Kam-chung, Wong Long-wai, his wife and other friends.

   The prosecution alleged that as the group were leaving the restaurant, Wong Long-wai met Chan and blamed Chan for having assaulted Wong Pak-nin the previous night.

     Wong Pak-nin recalled he saw Wong Kam-chung warding off a man who attacked Wong Long-wai. The witness said he had introduced Wong Long-wai to Ms Mui the previous evening.

  Following the alleged slapping incident, the witness said Ms Mui's then boyfriend, Lam Kwok-bun, came in and asked him why Ms Mui had been hit. The witness said it might have been a misunderstanding.

   Suddenly a male whom the witness did not know came in and hit him once on the left cheekbone with a portable phone, the court heard. The male was then stopped by Mr Lam.

  When defence counsel Jim Chandler asked whether the dispute had spilled over to the next evening, the witness said: ''That I can't say.''    Asked by Mr Chandler if Wong Long-wai had lost face because Ms Mui had ignored him, the witness said: ''I did not see what happened. But that's what I heard.''    The witness said he had heard rumours that the Sun Yee On, the Hunan gang, the 14K and the anti-triad bureau were looking for him, and he booked a ticket to Canada.

   He said he learned from the radio over lunch at the airport that Wong Long-wai had been shot dead in the early hours of May 7, 1992.

   Another witness, movie cameraman Wong Man-wan, said he was about to get into a car near the restaurant when he saw a man rush up and stab Wong Long-wai.

   He said during the ensuing chaos, another man in a suit, claiming to be ''Yiu-hing'', walked up to Wong Long-wai and said: ''I am of Sun Yee On,'' before striking him in the face with his portable phone.

   He later learned the man was surnamed Chan.

   Wong Kam-chung then walked up and tried to talk to the armed man, but he was also chopped.

  Wong Long-wai was taken to the Baptist Hospital, where he was shot dead two days later.

 The hearing continues today.
