In our report 'The intolerable hulk' on page A16 yesterday we incorrectly stated that Efthimios Mitropoulos, secretary general of the International Maritime Organisation, had warned that if a new convention on the recycling of ships went so far as to ban beaching altogether, there was a danger it would not be supported by countries like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. We wrongly attributed to him the quote: 'You might want to ask those countries with major ship-recycling industries whether they would adopt, or become party to, a convention that specially banned beaching ... and then consider what would be the value of a convention to which those states were not party? That, I think, is very much at the heart of the matter.' The warning and the quote should have been attributed to the head of the IMO's public information services, Lee Adamson.
