I READ with some interest Ms Liliana Ng's bizarre rhetoric relating to those she describes as ''anti fur activists'' (South China Morning Post, March 15). As I am sure Ms Ng is very well aware, such campaigners do not seek to, indeed could not hope to, ''control how people lead their lives''. Instead they are individuals who give up time and resources to educate people and hopefully encourage them to consider the consequences of their choices. The decline in the fur trade experienced in recent years is, I believe, testimony to the fact people now accept that such cruelty to animals is no way for a civilised society to behave. But this is not the main issue here. The Freeview Society has exercised its right to let people know its views via the media, but would apparently be happy to see that right removed from those whose views are purely compassion-based. Ms Ng claims to stand for freedom of choice and to promote such qualities as courtesy and tolerance, but the language she uses is not the language of freedom or tolerance. The great many people who are now opening their eyes to some of the unacceptable things we do, both environmental and otherwise, are the people who will maintain Hong Kong's image and reputation in the world at large, and not those who object so vehemently about being asked to consider their choices. Finally Ms Ng, nobody is trying to control how you lead your life, these people are simply hoping to put people like you in the minority! R. MORLEY London, UK
