To wrap up Le French May in le style, Star Movies is offering up The Black Box ( Friday at 9pm; in French with English subtitles), a 2005 thriller adapted from a novella by Tonino Benacquista and directed by Richard Berry (The Valet). Arthur Seligman (Paris-born comedian Jose Garcia) is involved in a car accident that puts him in a coma for several hours. On his way back to consciousness, he is delirious, uttering seemingly incomprehensible phrases. He wakes with no recollection of the events leading up to the accident. The nurse on duty records his speech in a black notebook, which she gives to him as he leaves the hospital, hoping it will help him piece together what happened. As the police begin to take an interest in the case, Seligman becomes obsessed with discovering the truth himself. As he struggles to interpret the notes and his fragmented flashbacks - of a murder, the death of his brother, a serial killer - Seligman starts to blur reality with hallucination, consciousness with the subconscious. Is he perpetrator or victim? What is he guilty of? Funnyman Garcia plays against type as the paranoid, menaced Seligman, and Academy Award-winning Marion Cotillard (above; La Vie en Rose) plays Isabella Kruger, his nurse.
