Employers with foresight know the importance of training and retaining top talent in good times or bad. They can see that a policy of paying attention to things, such as engagement, alignment and good communication, will enable them to weather a storm better than competitors and contend with whatever challenges arise.

Since 2001, Hewitt Associates has conducted a biannual Best Employers in Asia survey, specifically to identify such companies and understand the people management practices that set them apart.

The resulting study provides insights into how these employers achieve a real business advantage through good human resources (HR) and explores what it takes to create a work environment where people consistently meet the highest standards.

An independent judging panel selects the final list of 'Best Employers' in each market after assessing the research data and coming up with its own key criteria.

This year, the Hong Kong panel looked for important themes such as engagement and sustainability in difficult times, career opportunities, commitment to learning and development, and employee perceptions of the company.

Of the 40 or so organisations in the Hong Kong study, six made it to the final. They were commended for their performance in three areas - the continuing execution of programmes, the persistent empowerment of managers, and effective HR functions.
