ARCHITECT Edward Ho Sing-tin was elected the first unofficial chairman of the public works sub-committee.
The other contestant, engineer Samuel Wong Ping-wai, was elected deputy.
The committee is responsible for scrutinising all works projects which involve public funding. It was previously chaired by the Financial Secretary.
Mr Ho said he would refrain from chairing the committee if he faced any conflict of interest.
Independent legislator Emily Lau Wai-hing, who was the only one to have abstained in the election, had asked whether Mr Ho's background as a prominent architect would lead to a conflict of interest.
She said candidates should not have been engaged in fields relevant to public works, such as architecture and engineering.
