Veteran singer-songwriter George Lam Chi-cheung, 61, likes taking walks - long ones - such as a hike from Mong Kok to Tsim Sha Tsui, hopping on a ferry across Victoria Harbour to Queen's Pier and from there walking to North Point. This may explain his ability to sing long medleys without losing his breath.

'I don't think about retirement. As long as I can reach the high notes I will keep going,' Lam said.

Not everyone can sing his songs and he admits they're hard to master. 'That's why people avoid my songs at karaoke. Some try and I give them high marks for that.'

Lam (above) plays two gigs at the Coliseum next week, singing his classic love ballads and medleys.

Creating medleys is what made Lam famous in the Canto-pop scene since the 1970s. Lam will open next week's shows with his signature long medley, 10 Minutes 12 Seconds.

The medley encapsulates the best of the 80s, combining more than 15 popular Canto songs, including Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing's Monica, Sam Hui Koon-kit's God of Fortune, Roman Tam Pak-sin's Laser Centre, Anita Mui Yim-fong's Flying Across the Stage and Alan Tam Wing-lun Love Trap.

Lam said he would never forget the night when the song won first prize at TVB's Jade Solid Gold music awards in 1985. 'All of the artists whose songs I chose for the medley were in the audience that night.
