Dell, the world's second-largest personal computer supplier, sees the mainland's computer market becoming the first in Asia to recover, thanks to Beijing's 4 trillion yuan (HK$4.54 trillion) economic stimulus initiative.

'China is the most likely to resume growth because the government's stimulus packages appear to be working,' said Steve Felice, president of Dell's small and medium business unit.

'We are seeing signs of stability in China and India.'

Dell was the No4 personal computer brand on the mainland, with shipments of about 3.5 million units last year, research firm Gartner said. The top three suppliers in the country are Lenovo Group, Hewlett-Packard and Founder Technology.

Mr Felice said Dell had seen traction on the mainland with the stimulus efforts in the areas of health care and education.

'I haven't seen a whole lot [of demand] from the rural area home appliance subsidy programme,' he said. 'I was not tremendously optimistic about profitability in this area.'
