On the May 12 anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake, the Student Work-Study Centre of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) held a fund-raising activity entitled 'New Great Wall Caring Action for Students in the 5.12 Earthquake Disaster Areas'. With each 100 yuan (HK$113.70) received in donations, a set of stationery and some daily necessities such as towels and water bottles were packaged and sent to a child in areas hit by the quake. The aim was to send gifts to children for Children's Day, which was yesterday. On the first day 3,449 yuan was collected. Details about how the money was to be spent were provided to donors. According to the organisers, 80 of the 100 yuan would be used for purchasing the goods in the package and mail delivery, 12 yuan would go to the 'New Great Wall 5.12 Self-renewal Scholarship' and 8 yuan was for operational expenses. The Student Work-Study Centre provided invoices to everyone who made a contribution and kept track of how much was donated. Donors wrote greetings on cards, and recipients can return the greetings or write a 'thank you' note to the donors. Xu Guobin, vice-party secretary of GDUFS, was among those who gave money. 'We are not only full of sympathy for victims of the Sichuan earthquake, but are very enthusiastic about taking part in this caring activity,' he said. 'We are showing our love in a practical way.'
