Requirements: Landscape architects should enjoy nature and the outdoors. They should also appreciate gardens and plants.

Like all design careers, landscape architecture requires a creative mind. It is important to look for inspiration from your surroundings. They might be a hotel lobby or a park, as long as horticulture can be incorporated.

Architects have to communicate with clients, contractors and all parties involved in the design project, so an outgoing personality is essential. Qualifications: To be a licensed landscape architect you need to become a professional member of The Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects.

A master's degree in landscape architecture, at least two years of related work experience and passing the professional examinations organised by the association are required for membership. Currently, only the University of Hong Kong offers a master's degree in landscape architecture. Graduates in urban planning or architecture will have an advantage in applying for the master's programme. Average salary: The starting salary of a landscape architect is around HK$15,000 to HK$20,000. Senior architects make $HK30, 000 to HK$40,000.

Work prospects: A newly employed architect usually starts as an assistant landscape architect. They are not assigned any design work, but begin with administrative tasks, such as preparing materials for presentations and contacting clients. After they become familiar with the operations of the company, they will be assigned to work on a small portion of a design project. After three to four years, they can handle design projects under the supervision of senior architects.

During the course of a project, architects have to be in constant communication with clients. They often visit the design site to monitor progress. They also have to visit commercial gardens to look for suitable flowers and plants for their design. Landscape architecture is an ever changing field, and architects have to keep up with new developments. Gardens and parks are good sources of inspirations.
