The Portuguese presence in Macau continues to manifest itself through the large number of restaurants serving - or purporting to serve - Portuguese cuisine. While an estimated 30 restaurants claim to serve Portuguese dishes, only about half that number serves food that you would  find in Portugal. Most of the others serve a hodgepodge of Chinese, Portuguese and Macanese fare - some of which is actually quite tasty.
Here is a highly selective list of 10 restaurants favoured by Macau's Portuguese community.
A Lorcha, 289 Rua do Almirante Sergio, Macau (853) 2831 3193  
Long favoured by the Portuguese community, this quaint little eatery in the inner harbour serves authentic Portuguese and Macanese dishes in informal surroundings. The service is professional and unobtrusive. 
Espaco Lisboa, 8 Rua dos Gaivotas, Coloane (853) 2888 2226  
An award-winning executive chef serves  authentic dishes with a creative flourish in informal surroundings just off Coloane's town square.
A Petisqueira, 15 Rua de S Joao, Taipa (853) 2882 5354  
Famous for its Portuguese-style tenderloin steaks and spicy prawns with garlic, this unpretentious restaurant is located off the tourist track in Taipa village. It is very popular with the Portuguese community.
Clube Militar de Macau, 975 Avenida da Praia Grande, Macau  (853) 2871 4000  
The salmon-and-white fa?ade is all that remains of the formerly private club's original structure. The rest of the building was torn down and rebuilt by the outgoing administration. You go there as much for the elegant colonial surroundings as you do for the food. This is a good place to reminisce about a more leisurely era. 
Henri's Galley, 4G-H Avenida da Republica, Macau (853) 2855 6251  
One of Macau's oldest Portuguese-style restaurants, it serves both Macanese and Portuguese dishes. The African chicken, grilled salmon and curried crab are highly recommended. The tables out front offer stunning views of the harbour and Macau Tower.
Fernando's, 9 Hac Sa Beach, Coloane (853) 2888 2264  
Long favoured by Hong Kong expatriates - the colony's last governor, Chris Patten, dined there whenever he was in town - this open-air eatery is famous for its sardines, suckling pig and grilled pork  ribs.
Lord Stow's Bakery, 1 Rua da Tassara, Coloane (833) 2888 2534  
This is a bakery and not a restaurant, but the Portuguese egg tarts are reputedly the best in town.  Apparently people fly all the way from Taiwan  to buy them.
Madeira Portuguese Restaurant, Shop 2408A, Venetian Macao, the Cotai Strip (853) 2896 3399  
This could well be the only Portuguese restaurant located in one of Macau's growing list of five-star hotels. The menu features Macanese and Portuguese cuisine with Asian influences. Elegant surroundings and an extensive wine list. 
O Manel, 90 Rua Fernao Mendes Pinto, Taipa (853) 2882 7571  
Located on the outskirts of Taipa Village, this unpretentious little cafe is famous for its delicious grilled chicken, pork ribs and suckling pig. 
O Santos II, 28 Rua dos Clerigos, Taipa (853) 825 594  
The original O Santos, located on Rua do Cunha in Taipa Village, has long been favoured by Macau's Portuguese community for its authentic peasant dishes in rustic surroundings. Located in a restored village house just around the corner, O Santos II has gone upmarket with nicer surroundings and a more extensive menu.
