HK$23.6m grant for marine centre

The Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative Technology led by City University has been awarded HK$23.6million funding, it was announced this week. The University Grants Committee's Areas of Excellence Scheme gives sustained funding to projects with excellent performance. The centre's outstanding contributions to research and management of the marine environment in Hong Kong and worldwide was recognised.

CUHK professor honoured

A Chinese University academic has been awarded the Second Hong Kong Humanity Award. Leung Ping-chung, professor emeritus in orthopaedics and traumatology, was honoured for his 40 years of service in the medical field. The award was co-organised by the Hong Kong Red Cross and Radio Television Hong Kong with the aim of paying tribute to people who live up to and put into practice the spirit of humanity. Professor Leung has visited the world's most poverty-stricken regions and set up Operation Concern, a voluntary medical rehabilitation team, which offers free surgery, training and rehabilitation to residents of remote areas on the mainland. Over the past 15 years, more than 15,000 patients were treated, 2,300 surgical operations were conducted and more than 300 medical and nursing staff were trained.

Climate poster acclaimed

A Year Three student at Baptist University with a major in public relations and advertising has won second prize in a global student poster competition. Jointly organised by the International Advertising Association and Dentsu, a Japanese advertising agency, under the theme of climate change, the competition received 145 entries from students in 13 countries and regions. Yolanda Cheng created a powerful image featuring a genetically deformed creature to convey the message that climate change is no longer a fairy tale and that human beings have to change their attitudes to protect the environment.
