Abuse of the elderly on the increase

Against Elderly Abuse handled 1,780 cases of abuse of elderly people last year - an average of almost five cases a day and up 13.3 per cent from the 2007 figure, the welfare group reported yesterday. Of last year's cases, about 35 per cent involved 'financial abuse' in which family members cheated elderly people out of money or took their welfare payments.
