So what's the point of buying Apple's new iPhone 3G S when it looks exactly like the iPhone 3G? Well, according to initial reports, the S stands for speed, as in processor speed, as well as network speed. With the 3G S, you now get a 600MHz processor with 256MB of RAM, compared to a 400MHz processor and only 128MB of RAM for the ordinary 3G model. The 3G S also upgrades the data networking speed to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, up from the basic 3G model's 3.6Mbps. In addition, Apple has upgraded the camera to 3 megapixels, from 2 megapixels, and put in auto-focus, as well as a feature that lets you focus on an area of the picture by tapping the screen. You also get video recording and a compass with the new model, and there's a white version for users who want their iPhone to match other gadgets. On top of that, Apple has also put in a slightly better battery, which ups audio and video playback from 24 hours and 7 hours to 30 hours and 10 hours respectively. The rest of the iPhone 3G S stays pretty much the same as its predecessor, although reports suggest that the screen is now more resistant to fingerprints and is a bit warmer in colour. Pricing for the iPhone 3G S has not been set in Hong Kong, but is an extra US$100 overseas. Instead of the HK$4,488 for the standard 3G version, expect to pay about HK$5,300. Pros: faster performance and data speeds, better camera, video recording, available in white Cons: unless you get the white version, no one will know you've upgraded Got a gadget you'd like us to feature?
