I REFER to the article ''The People Forgotten By Giveaway Budget'' (Sunday Morning Post, March 6), and would like to clarify the rent increase resulting from the current rates revaluation.
I was surprised to read as a result of the revaluation Fong Liu, who pays $450 per month for a bedspace in a Shamshuipo flat, would have to pay tens of dollars more in rent. The premises in question have been visited, and I calculate the increased rates payable for the whole flat will be $43 per month for the year 1994/95. Sharing this between all the flat's tenants, on the basis of space occupied, Mr Fong should pay a maximum $2 per month only.
I would also take this opportunity to inform your readers if a tenant or sub-tenant has any queries regarding an increase in rent due to a rates increase, or indeed on any other tenancy matter, he may contact our rent officers for free advisory and mediatory services by telephoning 805-7666. A booklet, Guide To The Landlord And Tenant (Consolidation) Ordinance, is also available on request.
