A 13-year-old and his teacher will play a starring role in the next Superman chapter book, after winning a national essay competition, reports MSNBC.com.

Hakeem Bennett, a special-needs student at Public School 36 in Brooklyn, in the United States, won the Stone Arch Books national essay contest.

The contest called for students to write a story about their real-life heroes, and Hakeem chose his teacher, Mr Brown.

Mr Brown is blind in one eye and uses a guide dog, so Hakeem wrote an essay about how Mr Brown lives courageously despite his disability.

The essay earned Hakeem the starring role as a kid who helps Superman save Mr Brown and other students trapped in a school by an earthquake. The book, The Kid Who Saved Superman, is part of a series of chapter books featuring new stories of Superman and Batman, with original art by DC Comics.

'He was totally blown away,' Principal Johanna Schneider told msnbc.com. 'He has to take it all in and digest it.

'We really think he's going to be a real success. This opportunity, I feel, really has boosted his self-esteem.'
