Tony Cruz and Matthew Chadwick got themselves on the scoreboard for the afternoon when Single Malt scored an every-chance win over favourite Fast Winner in the Family Services Handicap (1,200m) for the cellar-dwelling sprinters. Although there was a hint of 'birthday win' about the victory, where Single Malt clawed back what looked to be a winning advantage in favour of Fast Winner, Cruz spoke positively about the New Zealand-bred son of Jahafil. 'He's been slowly improving and Matthew has given him a really good ride today,' Cruz said. 'I thought he was going to get stuck behind the leader Shining Dragon but it was only a brief hold up and it might have even helped him get to the line a bit more strongly.' Not only was this Single Malt's first win in 10 starts, the three-year-old had not previously been able to register a single placing.
