Some 150 primary students have created four giant totem poles with a green message. They are currently on display at apm mall in Kwun Tong.

It is the second year that the Totem Environmental Arts Project, co-organised by CLP Power Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (HKYAF), has been held. Students from Beacon Hill School, Carmel Leung Sing Tak School, Clearwater Bay School and SKH Yan Laap Primary School took part.

The students attended a series of workshops to learn how to convey eco-friendly messages through visual art. Working with professional artists, they designed the 2-metre-high totem poles to represent marine conservation, consumerism, global warming and energy consumption.

'People are surprised at the quality of things children can make,' said Gareth Dunster, an artist with HKYAF.

'The kids were very ambitious and the standard [of the finished products] was quite high.'

Dunster said he really enjoyed working with the youngsters who showed creativity and imagination.
