Making history as assistant trainer

Murray Bell

Carol Yu proudly claimed a piece of history when she became the first woman to be licensed as an assistant trainer. Former jockey Yu, 33, has been retired from riding for eight years and has been an acting assistant trainer to Tony Millard since the departure of Raymond Tsui Kwai-leung three months ago. Yesterday, her role was formalised by the licensing committee. 'I'm very pleased because I've applied for an interview with the club every year since I stopped riding, and now it's happened,' she beamed. Millard's Street Cat (Derek Leung Ka-chun) landed the eighth event, earning connections a HK$600,000 first-win bonus and giving team Millard their 24th winner for the term, and their third in two meetings. The other news from the licensing committee was that Gabriel Lee Siu-tsang was licensed as assistant trainer to Andy Leung Ting-wah.
