People can give the environment a double boost by using reusable shopping bags made from recycled plastic bottles, a green company says.
The GPET bags are woven from fibre recovered from bottles made out of polyethylene terephthalate, a type of polyester commonly referred to as PET.
Forleda Eco-Services is the Hong Kong company behind the bags.
Forleda marketing manager Kin Lee Kin-keung said the city lacked the facilities to recycle non-woven reusable bags when they wore out. 'They can't be recycled in Hong Kong and will go to landfills in the end. But our bags are totally recyclable,' Mr Lee said.
GPET bags can only be made from the bottles, as caps and labels are made from other types of plastic.
'Although these bags are more expensive than conventional ones, we are confident they will get popular gradually. The problem we're facing now is that the customers don't know about these bags.'
