Temples
Angkor Wat is so important for the people of Cambodia, it is on the national flag. It is admired all over the world. There is only one rival to Angkor Wat in southeast Asia. It's called Bagan and it is in Myanmar.
Angkor today is a huge collection of temples made of stone. But it once sat at the heart of a city made of wood - the city is long gone. 
The temples were built for the kings of the Khmer people. They once had an empire that stretched to Vietnam, Thailand and Yunnan in China.
More than a wat
Most people call the Angkor complex Angkor Wat. But Angkor Wat is just the biggest temple you see when you first arrive. Angkor means 'city' and wat means 'temple'. So the entire complex of more than 1,000 temples and ruins should be simply called Angkor. 
The earliest Angkor temples were built in the ninth century. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century for King Suryavarman II. Surrounded by a moat and outer walls, the towers represent Mount Meru. In  Hinduism, Mount Meru was the home of the gods.
A city before its time
Most of the buildings that created Angkor got underway around the year 900. The kings had artificial lakes created - probably to provide water for rice farming - and started building temples. 
By the year 1200, it was probably the biggest city ever known to the ancient world. Archaeologists today think it covered a bigger area than modern Los Angeles - and with no cars.
A civilisation declines
The building of temples did not stop after Angkor Wat, but it did not last for much longer. Jayavarman VII defeated the northern Vietnamese in a battle and became king in 1181. He built some of Angkor's most beautiful temples - the Bayon, Ta Prohm and Preah Khan.
No great king appeared for the Khmers after Jayavarman, and their great city fell into decline. In 1431, the Thais invaded Angkor and the great Khmer empire was over. The Khmers scattered, and Angkor was left to the jungle. It stayed there until French explorers discovered it hundreds of years later.
