I was struck by a deep sense of d?j? vu while looking at this new advert for the self-styled world's local bank. Has HSBC decided to branch out into the apparel business and merge with Benetton, seeing how its attempt to diversify businesses in North America rather backfired during the financial crisis? Suddenly, it was like time-travelling back to the 1980s, when the Benetton chain, with a knack for generating controversy, was still making those nice ads featuring children and people from around the world under the United Colours of Benetton banner. The united bank customers of HSBC, perhaps? There is, presumably, no copyright for ad campaigns. So why create when you can copy? We just hope HSBC won't be following in the footsteps of Benetton and start running ads with horses mating, and nuns and priests French-kissing each other.
