Media-friendly Joseph Yam pays tribute to 'colleagues'

Hong Kong Monetary Authority chief executive Joseph Yam Chi-kwong is a great admirer of Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the United States Federal Reserve.

The two have a bit in common, such as long service - Mr Greenspan (left) ran the Fed for 19 years from 1987 to 2006, while Mr Yam, who has been in the job since the authority was formed in 1993, will be stepping down at the end of September after 16 years at the helm.

Both men are on their second marriages. They both like writing - books for Mr Greenspan and blogs for Mr Yam.

But their biggest similarity is the way they handle the media, usually to their own advantage.

Such was the case last night when Mr Yam (below), while receiving an 'Outstanding Contribution to Financial Markets' award from Euromoney, took the opportunity to praise the media for their contribution to the finance sector, seeing them as a 'complementary, parallel infrastructure'.
