A JOINT air traffic control centre will be established to serve airports in Hong Kong, Macau, Zhuhai and Shenzhen before 1997, according to a top mainland official.
Zeng Zhikian, head of the personnel, labour and training division of Zhuhai airport, said yesterday representatives of the four cities had agreed to form a joint civil aviation control centre to co-ordinate air-traffic control at the airports.
He said they were now looking for a suitable site on which to build the centre.
He said if the four parties finalised negotiations, construction of the centre and the purchase of equipment - predicted to cost about 200 million yuan (about HK$177 million) - would begin soon.
He was confident the centre would be completed and be fully operational by the end of next year or early 1996.
