UPS signs Vietnam express agreement

UNITED Parcel Service (UPS) has signed an agreement with the Ho Chi Minh City Post and Telecom and the Hanoi Post and Telecom to provide express services in Vietnam from April 1.

UPS will first introduce its inbound service, carrying express letters and documents and non-documents.

''The Vietnam service will benefit our 1.2 million customers world-wide, who are already, or are interested in doing business in Vietnam,'' said Richard de Souza, Hong Kong manager of UPS.

The company plans to introduce a service out of Vietnam before the end of this year.

It will work through partners in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to provide UPS express services.

The service will be provided following the guidelines of the US regulations on Vietnam, following the Clinton administration's recent lifting of the economic embargo on the country.

''We have been closely monitoring the business and economic developments in Vietnam and evaluating the support services needed by the business community,'' Mr de Souza said.

''We see great potential in the Vietnamese express distribution industry and for us to service customers in this market,'' he added.
