Australian cuisine

Meat pies and Lamingtons

Australians used to joke that their cuisine was meat pies and Lamingtons. A Lamington is a cube of sponge cake covered in chocolate icing and coconut. Meat pies are English. Australian cuisine in the early days was very English because the British started settling down in Australia in 1788.

The Australian Aborigines lived on tribal lands around the continent before the British came. They were mostly hunters and gatherers. Their diet included seafood, kangaroos, berries and nuts, and even grubs, such as the witchetty grub. A witchetty grub is the larvae of wood-eating moth. It can be eaten raw or slightly cooked.

Many influences

Even if Australia does not have a famous cuisine of its own like China or Italy, it is still a fabulous place to eat. For a start, most of the fresh ingredients are much better than what we get in Hong Kong. And because Australia today is a nation of immigrants, you can find all kinds of cuisine there.

It is true that, like Hongkongers, a lot of Australians eat fast food, but they also eat food from all over the world. Australia has some of the best Vietnamese food in the world. Because it has such good seafood, it is also a great place for Japanese cuisine. It is even possible to find authentic Chinese food.
